There were plenty of reasons for “Handsome Harry” Borden to be murdered. After all, he had cost numerous investors their life savings with questionable securities. Ruth Lester gets secretarial training to support herself after her father dies. Her father was a well-known criminal lawyer, and Ruth grew up discussing court cases with him. In our decade she'd have gone on to become a lawyer herself, but this is the late nineteen twenties. Still, Ruth's sharp powers of reasoning come in handy when her fiancé becomes the number-one suspect in the murder of her boss, "Handsome Harry" Borden.

Ruth is smarter and more observant than the Detective Sergeant McMann, who turns every interrogation into "the third degree." Ruth challenges McMann's assumptions as cleverly her father would have in court. This is entertaining. Surprisingly, McMann and Ruth eventually become almost partners in the investigation. McMann may be a bully, but he's a bully with a degree of compassion and common sense.

The Black Pigeon was first published in 1929. Before it was a book, it appeared as a newspaper serial. Mystery serials were very popular in the late twenties and thirties. People didn't have much money for books in those depressed economic times. The structure of the story is no doubt influenced by its serialization.

The action stays almost entirely in the office building that houses the scene of the crime. McMann stays put, sending his subordinates out to spy on suspects or gather info. Ruth gets out a bit, but the narrative is mostly linear, with the questioning of one suspect after another. This is not an intricately plotted puzzle mystery, but more focused on the personalities of the characters.

The Black Pigeon is a stand-alone novel, not a Bonnie Dundee mystery. I liked it, although my favorite Anne Austin mystery remains The Avenging Parrot. Resurrected Press always includes an informative introduction, which I appreciate.
