Three time travelers arrived in a Victorian winter to find a man (you'll have to read for yourself to discover why), but they would have only a day or two to find him before the next tunnel opened allowing them to leave. If they didn't leave when tunnel opened, they could be stuck in this time and place indefinitely.

Almost as soon as the time travelers arrived in this little Victorian village they stumbled across a burned corpse. Then they learned several young people were missing.

So there is a lot going on for so few pages in this book. Are the missing youth connected to the corpse? Do either have anything to do with the man the time travelers are seeking? Will they find him? Will they find the exit tunnel or be trapped back in time?

A lot of questions you will only have answered when you read the book. A quick read so it should be an easy decision to read it. But I have to say this was different than anything I have ever read to be sure. Not bad, and I don't regret reading it. I would recommend it for that reason alone: it was very unique compared to everything else I've read.

Okay, I'm a sucker for time-travel sci-fi, so Christmas Past was always going to be in with a good chance of pleasing me. A huge amount of action is fitted into this short story, and I loved it. It reads like the start of a series, because that's exactly what the author intended. Just downloading Time Trial now!
Given the short nature of this story, I think I will just give it an overall review, as opposed to trying to split it into good and bad sections. My main complaint has to do with copy-editing; there are quite a few punctuation issues. Strangely enough, the lack of necessary commas, etc., seems to be the only major issue that I could find.

The story begins against a snowy backdrop in a grove of evergreens. We are presented with three characters and right from the beginning, we know that these characters are acquainted with a world that isn't Earth - although we don't know much more about their past than that. The characters then discover a body, and we are led to believe that while it may not be a part of their yet-unclear directive, they find it important to somehow resolve the situation. (Sorry for any awkwardness - I'm trying very hard not to give too much away.)

Right from the beginning, I was impressed by several things. Owens has a good understanding of effective POV and the proper amount of description - we are treated to some nice imagery and the feel of the characters, without a running list of their every characteristic.

As the story progressed, I also enjoyed his sense of flow and pacing. The story quickly leads its reader from a sense of general curiosity to mystery, and later to moments of terror. The storytelling is apt, with a good mixture of show and tell, and by the end, I wanted to read more about these interesting "Timewasters."
A generally good story. Perhaps a bit too reminiscent of Doctor Who in the beginning, but as it progressed its style did as well. I'm guessing from the subtitle there will be more with these same characters? I'd definitely look forward to reading them. My main problem is that the ending, the main arc of it anyways, becomes apparent as soon as they meet the doctor. I wasn't expecting his identity to be what it was, but I could tell he had something to to with the missing.
Overall, it was nice, entertaining short story. I think it would do better in a collection of others in a series than it does on its own.
I enjoyed the story and would like to see longer books in the same universe. However, in the end it was a forgettable story. A story this short just doesn't give much opportunity for character development.

I'm not sure what led to the choice to use Christmas in the title, other than maybe marketing for the season. It really had nothing to do with the story itself.
Interesting story of time travel with intriguing characters. Story was much to short and has readers demanding more which I suppose is a good thing for the author. Too much back story with little explaining which brings hope for more to come.
The story is short and concise. It doesn't deviate from the three time travelers quest to find their "man" and wraps up nicely albeit with a few things left unexplained.

This time travel story definitely takes some cues from other works in this genre like "Sliders" and "Doctor Who" but not in a way that makes it feel like a rip-off. The three main characters fill in the necessary roles, a feisty woman, an intellectual man of action, and an old historian whose knowledge is vital but is lacking in the physical department.

The mystery elements of the story are strong enough to keep your reading and hoping for answers. What has happened to the children? How are the time travelers involved? Who is this "man" that they are so intent on finding and why?

The antagonist is sufficiently creepy, but sympathetic in his own right. He is also the source of the few things that are left in the air at the end. These loose strings don't necessarily take away from the story in any way, but left me slightly disappointed that there isn't a sequel already that could fill in the gaps.

The writing is simple and easy to read and tells the story effectively. There are a few issues with continuity but these are reserved for minor details that don't necessarily hurt the story unless you're a very nitpicky reader.

All in all, this is a decent short story, that lays the groundwork for what will hopefully be a continuing series. If you are a fan of Doctor Who or Sliders, this is a pretty good read.
